First Images of Leonardo DiCaprio Western: The Revenant

Check out the first images of Leonardo DiCaprio as vengeful fur trapper in Alejandro González Iñárritu's new western, The Revenant. Following up the magic realism mania of Birdman would seem a tricky proposition for most filmmakers. But Alejandro González Iñárritu is already hard at work on his latest film, which looks to be an even more extreme shoot than the one that attempted to appear like a single, uncut steadicam movement. Indeed, The Revenant is a new Western from the Mexican filmmaker that is currently filming in the freezing tundra of Canadian winter with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson. And the first several pictures provided by EW of the shoot indeed look chilling. The simple western tale of what happens to that last man left for dead, The Revenant imagines the purportedly true story of a 19th century fur trapper named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio). When Glass is mauled by a bear and left to die in the woods by his companions, who rob his mangled body, he survives his injuries against all odds, just so he can seek a terrible vengeance. And soon, he is coming for the “friends” that left him out in the woods, including Hardy, Poulter, and Gleeson. They’re going to wish they finished what the bear started, but we won’t. After the success of Birdman, this trip into the wilderness, both physical and allegorical, may be exactly what the award-deprived DiCaprio is searching for. The Revenant carves its bloody path of vengeance on Christmas Day in 2015.
