Mr. Holmes Trailer: Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes

Watch the first trailer for Mr. Holmes, the new Bill Condon film about Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes on his last case...

Casting Sir Ian McKellen at age 75 as Sherlock Holmes likely promises a different picture painted than the one by Benedict Cumberbatch on BBC, or the variation of Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie films. How marvelous (especially on that last bit).

In Mr. Holmes, McKellen reunites with his writing and directing collaborator from Gods and Monsters. That 1998 film still stands as one of the great achievements in both McKellen and director Bill Condon’s careers. It won Condon an Oscar for screenwriting and got McKellen a nomination for Best Actor. More importantly, it also shined new light on genre director master James Whale and his strange, bittersweet end.

Now, it appears that they’re ready to follow Sherlock Holmes to the end of his days with one last adventure. In the new film based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, it’s 1947 and an elderly Holmes has returned from Japan where he witnessed first hand the devastation of our sudden nuclear age. However, Holmes seems somewhat rejuvenated when he returns to the country home where he acts as a beekeeper with only his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker) to keep him company. Frustrated with the diminishing sharpness of his mind, Holmes relies on Roger’s senses to help him revisit and solve the final case of his career, an unsolved mystery that previously ushered him into retirement.

Mr. Holmes will likely play in the U.S. sometime this summer and already has a UK release date set for June 19, 2015.
