Supergirl: Images of Melissa Benoist in Costume

Check out the first pictures of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl in the upcoming CBS and Greg Berlanti superhero TV series.

The wait is over for all those who have been wondering about how the famed Supergirl costume would transfer to the small screen for the upcoming CBS series.

On the heels of getting our first images of the pilot shoot earlier this week, we now have our first pictures of Melissa Benoist in the Supergirl costume, and they would do Kal-El proud.

In the publicity stills below, you can see Benoist donning a dark navy blue attire that is still very superhero chic, but decidedly more practical than recent DC comic book designs of the teenage heroine. It's also a major win for leggings lovers everywhere. The costume was designed by Colleen Atwood. In addition to designing the aesthetic and uniforms for CW’s The Flash and Arrow, Atwood has won Oscars for her work on Alice in Wonderland, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Chicago. She has also been nominated for her work on Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and Sleepy Hollow.

Supergirl is being executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (Chuck), and stars Melissa Benoist as the latest caped crime fighter in the Berlanti TV universe, which also includes Arrow and The Flash.

Supergirl is also set to star Laura Benanti, Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, Dean Cain, and Helen Slater.

Kara “Supergirl” Danvers is described in the series as having, at age 12, been sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. After repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.

Supergirl was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino in 1959 to be a female counterpart to her more famous relative.
