X-Men: Apocalypse – Angel Confirmed for the Roster

Bryan Singer has released new concept art that confirms Warren Worthington III (aka Angel) is appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse.

X-Men: Apocalypse now famously marks the intended conclusion of an “X-Men: First Class Trilogy.” That may be the case with its continuation of the 2011 film’s plot threads, but the actual team roster for the film is now definitely looking like the comic book “First Class,” with Angel definitely joining the mutant line-up.

As Bryan Singer is want to do, he revealed via Instagram that Angel is appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse with new tantalizing concept art, featuring the iconic wings of Warren Worthington III.

The production art is somewhat vague enough to confuse where it is set (it’s certainly a theater), but that is undeniably Angel in his noticeably pre-Archangel appearance. This also comes on the heels of Ben Hardy being cast in a mysterious but “important” role in X-Men: Apocalypse last month. Thus it’s probable that Hardy is joining Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), and Alexandra Shippe (Storm), as one of the younger recast X-Men originals.

Angel could play a conceivably small part in the film, as his first appearance on screen in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand (with a wasted Ben Foster) was shockingly short. But it’s safe to say that while X-Men: Apocalypse is lowering the curtain on at least some of the First Class cast, it is also setting up a future for the franchise, which Angel could be very useful for.

Also, Hugh Jackman’s recent revelation that he considers his next turn as Wolverine as probably his last indicates that Jackman’s role in X-Men: Apocalypse might be smaller than previously expected. After all, he is definitely signed up for The Wolverine 3, which begins production at the end of the year. Then again, for him to already have the claws out suggests that his “last ride” may begin in some capacity with Apocalypse (which begins shooting in May).

Nonetheless, I imagine the “Horseman of Death” will require more than a cameo, and Angel had that gig long before Old Man Logan, so…

X-Men: Apocalypse picks up with our period piece jumping mutants in 1983 when a new malevolent force of ancient power named Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is released. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), and Beast must join forces when faced with this onslaught. They will also be accmpoanied by a young cast of heroes that includes Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and Ororo Munroe (Alexandra Shipp). It opens May 27, 2016.
