Christopher Nolan Joins The Film Foundation Board of Directors

Christopher Nolan joins the Board of Directors for Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, which seeks to preserve celluloid.

In what amounts to a testament to Christopher Nolan’s growing status as one of film’s staunchest defenders, the Interstellar director was welcomed into the Film Foundation’s Board of Directors on Wednesday morning.

As a filmmaker who has personally supported in production of celluloid film for storytellers who do not want to be cornered into only using digital, Nolan has talked publicly about his preference for 35mm and even IMAX (which he popularized the use of for Hollywood films). He similarly spoke about the issue at the Tribeca Film Festival this week during a panel discussion we attended. That talk also covered his thoughts on studio interference and his favorite action sequence in The Dark Knight Rises.

“Chris’s passion, knowledge, and dedication to film is unparalleled,” said Martin Scorsese, the founder of the Film Foundation and its current chair. “He spearheaded the growing movement to ensure that film stock continues to be available for production and preservation. I know that his commitment to film and its preservation will be enormously helpful to the work of the foundation.”

Indeed, Nolan joins an impressive list of filmmakers on the board that also includes Woody Allen, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Curtis Hanson, Ang Lee, Alexander Payne, Robert Redford, and Steven Spielberg.

Nolan said of the announcement, “I’m honored to become a part of the pioneering and essential work of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is more important today than ever before. I hope I can help with that vital effort.”
