PT Demo Deleted from PlayStation Store Library

Silent Hills demo PT has been deleted from the PlayStation Store's library, meaning it's no longer available to download...

Last week, we heard the hugely disappointing news that Konami has cancelled Silent Hills, the survival horror game from Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro.

At the same time, that game's playable demo, P.T., was set to be de-listed from the PlayStation Store. While that removal was known about for some time, Konami's since done something rather more drastic: it's had P.T. taken off the PSN servers entirely.

This might not sound like much, but it's actually quite unusual. The usual approach on the PlayStation Store is to have an outgoing title de-listed, but still available on the server. This way, anyone with that title still in their personal library can download it again in the future. As anyone with dwindling hard drive space will know, adding and removing games to save room is a common practice.

But P.T.'s deletion means that anyone who hasn't downloaded the demo already will never get a chance to do so; even those who'd added it to their library, thinking that they could download it at a later date will find that the title has simply vanished.

Given just how well received P.T. was when it first appeared last year, the cancellation of Silent Hills - even in the face of the much-publicized departure of Hideo Kojima - seemed drastic. The obliteration of its playable demo simply seems - dare we say it - petty.

In the wake of Silent Hills' untimely death, a petition has gone up on change.org, which aims to keep the project going in some form. If Konami's deletion of P.T. is anything to go by, we'd say the chances of that happening are slim.

Konami has said that both the Metal Gear and Silent Hills franchises will continue despite the dramas of recent weeks. Whatever happens, Konami will have to build up its fan goodwill again after a string of highly disappointing announcements.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 4s with P.T. installed on them have started to sell for bizarre prices on eBay.
