Watch Pawn Sacrifice Trailer with Tobey Maguire vs. Liev Schreiber

Check out the first trailer for Pawn Sacrifice, a Cold War chess movie about Bobby Fischer and starring Tobey Maguire.

Once upon a time, Americans and Russians liked measuring their superiority in just about every form of competition. Whether it be hockey, basketball, or (ahem) nuclear proliferation, there was always a race going on. Indeed, at one point it even made the ultimate intellectual game of chess into a national sensation when Bobby Fischer sat down across the table from Boris Spassky. Thus enter Pawn Sacrifice, the Edward Zwick biopic that looks to help reclaim Bobby Fischer’s once illustrious reputation.

A chess prodigy from a young age, Brooklyn born Bobby Fischer eventually descended into probable mental illness later in his life. But before then, he was considered the preeminent chess player in the world, especially when he represented American pride against Soviet strength in 1972 for the World Chess Championship.

To capture that moment of tension and intellectual cold warfare, Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai, Defiance) is directing Tobey Maguire as Fischer and Liev Schreiber as Boris Spassky for when east met west. The film made waves when it premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and now it appears geared and ready for its September 18, 2015 release date.

Pawn Sacrifice also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, Lily Rabe, and Robin Weigert.
