E3 2015: Shenmue III Announced by Sony, Hits Kickstarter

Sony uses E3 as a platform to launch Shenmue III, which has already raised $1.75m on Kickstarter...

This year's E3 seems to be bringing back all sorts of fan-favourite names from the past this year. We've already had Fallout 4 and The Last Guardian get their announcements in Los Angeles, but what about this one - the sequel to the cult hit games Shenmue and Shenmue II.

Yes, more than a decade after the last game in Sega's groundbreaking action adventure saga came out, creator Yu Suzuki's returning to finish what he started. Announced at E3, Shenmue III has now gone live on Kickstarter, where Suzuki and his team at Ys Net are seeking $2M to get the project going.

The project's already gathering remarkable support, with funds already soaring past the $1.75M mark as I type this. The $2M goal is likely to be shattered within the next couple of hours, and it's more than likely to break the record set by Bloodstained a few days ago - the Koji Igarashi platformer that garnered $5.5M on Kickstarter.

Shenmue III is in development for PC and PlayStation 4, with the release currently set for December 2017.
