Gears of War 4 Revealed, Ultimate Edition Confirmed

Gears of War Ultimate Edition has a release date, and Gears of War 4 is on the way. Watch some gameplay footage from E3 2015 here.

Gears of War is making its return on Xbox One. The franchise, previously developed by Epic Games, is now in the hands of The Coalition. Studio head Rod Fergusson announced today at the Xbox E3 Media Briefing that Gears of War 4 is in development for Xbox One and will release holiday 2016.

Microsoft bought the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games in 2014 and originally assigned it to in-house studio Black Tusk Studios. Black Tusk was renamed to "The Coalition" and is now dedicated strictly to Gears of War.

Fergusson presided over an extended gameplay demo of the title at the briefing.

The series has always been mature in tone, but looked especially creepy in spots, showing off a cavern full of alien eggs and a variety of terrifying creatures that players will have to battle. Interestingly, the co-op appeared to show only two people. Gears of War has traditionally supported four players. We're sure more details will come out as E3 continues.

Fergusson also confirmed the previously leaked story that the original Gears of War will be getting a remastered edition for the Xbox One. Gears of War Ultimate Edition will launch on August 25, which is the 10th anniversary of the original game's launch. A one week beta of the game launched today.

The title will bring in gameplay features from Gears of War 3, and characters from later games in the series will also be available in multiplayer.
