Charlize Theron Goes to Dark Places in Trailer

Watch the trailer for Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult in the thriller Dark Places.

Sometimes nightmarish murder mysteries are exactly what they seem. And sometimes they’re a film adaptation of a Gillian Flynn novel. Indeed, with the Gone Girl found, the author’s next trip into bleakness has arrived with its first trailer, and Charlize Theron finds herself in some very Dark Places.

Based on Flynn’s best-selling novel, Dark Places follows Libby Day (Theron) 28 years after she was nearly massacred in a nighttime bloodbath that claimed the life of her mother. Escaping by the skin of her teeth, she has had to live with the fact that her older brother slaughtered her mama and tried to kill her for nearly three decades—unless he didn’t.

Safely locked behind bars for all-time, brother Ben (Corey Stoll) remains resolute that he did not kill those people…and a member of an amateur “murder club” named Lyle (Nicholas Hoult) believes him. Roping Libby into this put-to-bed case about death, possible Devil worshipping, and other assorted nastiness, they find a potential conspiracy much bigger than they could have anticipated.

This is the kind of juicy criminal web that Serial listeners yearn for, and Flynn’s knowing inclusion of such a “club” in the Hoult character makes for a tantalizing potboiler.

Dark Places also stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Christina Hendricks, Drea de Matteo, and Tye Sheridan.

Dark Places are found on Aug. 7, 2015.
