Jem And The Holograms: New Trailer Released

In which the truth about Synergy is revealed and fans continue to wonder where The Misfits are. Here's the new Jem movie trailer.

Whoo boy. On the heels of the failure of the Fantastic Four, it's hard to not hear warning klaxons sounding for Jem and the Holograms -- another beloved property getting a very 2015 makeover.

When the initial trailer for the film based on the 1980s Hasbro toyline and its equally cherished cartoon was released earlier this year, many Jem fans were wondering why creator Christy Marx wasn't involved, why there seemed to be no sign of The Misfits (the Holograms' rival, and arguably superior, band) and what the deal was with Synergy, the device Jem gets her powers of illusion from.

Well, the first two of those questions remain as mysterious as Easter Island or the continued popularity of "Uptown Funk." But the Synergy thing...well, that we have an answer for via the film's just-released second trailer. Take a look.

For reasons best left to the cultural sociologists to figure out, Synergy is now a Wall-E or, God help us, Earth to Echo movie projector/probable deus ex machina. Why director Jon Chu decide to go this route is beyond us, but we're guessing he thought it might be weird for a hologram lady to be hanging out with teens and watching them undress into their rockstar clothes all day. Or something. Who knows.

As always, we just can't wait to hear what professional Jem parodist Sienna D'Enema has to make of all of this.

Look, it's not like Jem is sacred, but increasingly it looks like this film is going to be hodgepodge of story elements randomly ripped from the show and wrapped up in a bow of ham-fisted girl power and half-assedness -- showing no respect for the source material along the way. This movie doesn't need The Misfits, it's already its worst enemy.
