Check out the poster for Disney's The Jungle Book, a live-action remake adapted by Jon Favreau and starring Bill Murray.

In the immortal words of Ricky Bobby, if you’re not first, you’re last. And Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book is definitely first in the race to offer a 21st century adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling classic novel. Beating Warner Bros. and Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book: Origins to the big screen by well over a year, this Disney film from director Jon Favreau (Elf, Iron Man) promises exactly what fans want: a live-action reimagining of the Walt Disney Animation Studios classic.

Adapted as much from the 1967 animated film as the Kipling short stories, The Jungle Book (2016) follows a young boy named Mowgli (Neel Sethi) on his journey from being raised by wolves to becoming the king of the jungle. The film also features the voice work of Idris Elba as the tiger villain Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson as the slinky serpent Kaa, Lupita Nyong’o as the mother wolf Raksha, Christopher Walken as King Louie, and Ben Kingsley as the black leopard Bagheera. And oh yeah, Bill Murray as Baloo.

Kipling’s The Jungle Book was a collection of stories first published in magazines during 1893 and 1894. In 1895, a The Second Jungle Book was produced chronicling the later adventures of an older Mowgli. These stories served as the inspiration for the Walt Disney Animation Classic The Jungle Book in 1967. Disney also distributed a moderately successful adaptation of the books in 1994 directed by Stephen Sommers (yes that Stephen Sommers) starring Carey Elwes and Lena Headey.
