Chloe Grace Moretz Takes On Aliens in The 5th Wave Trailer

Here’s your first look at the latest adaptation of a dystopian young adult novel.

Rick Yancey’s Y/A novel The 5th Wave got some terrific reviews when it came out in 2013 and with Hollywood on a seemingly unending quest to find the next Twilight or The Hunger Games, a film version was almost pre-ordained. Now we’ve gotten a look at the first trailer for the movie, which stars Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) as a teenage girl searching for her brother while an alien race proceeds with its plans to wipe humanity from the surface of the Earth.

Of course, Chloe’s character meets a hunky young man who wants to help her, but the twist is that he may be an alien in disguise. There’s a human male involved too so we have the makings of the classic Y/A love triangle here.

Some of the large-scale destruction looks impressive (the invaders are extinguishing us by triggering natural disasters instead of getting into a shooting war), and the cast includes solid names like Liev Schreiber, Ron Livingston, Maika Monroe and others. It just remains to be seen whether The 5th Wave brings something new to the table or serves up the same warmed-over formula as second-stringers like Divergent and The Host.

The 5th Wave arrives in theaters on January 15, 2016.
