5th Wave Trailer Brings Alien Apocalypse to Earth

Chloe Moretz must battle aliens and try to protect her brother in the first trailer for Sony Pictures' adaptation of YA novel The 5th Wave.

Sony Pictures just released the trailer for The 5th Wave, the film adaptation of the first book in the bestselling YA alien invasion series from Rick Yancy. Though the teaser for the film left a bit to be desired, the full-length trailer gives more context to the film, raising our expectations.

The 5th Wave tells the story of Cassie (Chloe Moretz), a teenage girl whose life — along with everyone else's on Earth — is torn apart when aliens start their multi-phased takeover of the planet. The first four phases are as follows: an EMP wave that wipes out all of the electronics on Earth, tsnuamis that take out coastline cities, a devestatingly fatal virus, and a ground attack carried out by aliens who look like humans. We won't spoil what the fifth wave is, but you can guess from those first four that it ain't pretty.

In the grand cacophony of YA book series out there, The 5th Wave is a pretty good one and is at least doing something a bit different in terms of subject matter. There are no werewolves, vampires, or evil dystopias here. No, The 5th Wave is notable for its lack of society — or, more accurately, for the ways in which society falls apart when a disaster of this magnitude humanity. This franchise could also do much worse than Chloe Moretz as its lead. The Kickass veteran has demonstrated herself more than capable of carrying a movie. We're filing this one under: cautiously excited.

The 5th Wave will hit theaters on January 16th, 2016.
